YWCA women participate in hunger strike in New Delhi
The YWCA of India, represented by the National Youth Secretary, Divya Vinod, and Hina Nawani, Office Assistant, joined in a demonstration in New Delhi to take a stand and position against the food price rise in the wake of inflation in India. It also expressed solidarity with the people of Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire where democratic values came to a halt and amidst violence, citizens were subject to all forms of human rights violations.
A 2 day hunger strike was organised by the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) on February 3 – 4, 2010, at Jantar Mantar New Delhi, to protest against the food price rise which is a result of inflation rates. The YWCA of India, along with a number of women’s organisations like the Joint Women’s Programme (JWP) and the Centre for Women’s Development Studies (CWDS), joined AIDWA to show support and make a statement demanding justice and alternative solutions. The demonstration was a culturally rich experience and expression through women performing thematic folk songs and slogan shouting had a huge impact on the public.
Divya Vinod and Hina Nawani also shared the message of the world movement with the activists. “The message of the World YWCA and India has always been peace, justice and development. The political and social environment of a country has a great impact on its women and children, and we stand in solidarity with the world movement to support the struggle for justice in Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire. The only solution for all these problems lies in gender equity, and we women must raise our voices against political and economical concerns everywhere,” said Divya Vinod.
Activists from all over the country were present, raising their voice in solidarity with those most affected by the crisis – the poor.
